On 15 May, the day of the patron saint of Gubbio, Sant'Ubaldo, there is a striking representation and historic race, the Ceri Race. The candles are not only large wooden sculptures of a caisson, with the statues on top of the three quarters of Gubbio, Sant'Ubaldo, San Giorgio and Sant'Antonio. These are carried by shoulders by the ceraioli, which is a tradition handed down from father to son for many years. Starting from the Piazza dei Consoli in Gubbio, a beautiful terrace overlooking the valley below, the ceraioli, giving the exchange every few hundred meters, run through the streets of the city to reach the basilica at the top of Mount Igino. The peculiarity of the race is that the three candles have a fixed order and can not make overtaking, which would be impossible in the narrow streets of the center, which is crowded with tourists who attend the race closely. The pride for ceraioli is to close the doors of the church before they can enter the second or third candle. In the days preceding the challenge, the ceraioli offer some refreshments in the taverns of the three districts, open to the public.
This beautiful land is still able to keep alive the spirit of quality food and good wine.
