Nestled against the slopes of Monte Ingino, is where you will find the ancient town of Gubbio, which is a one of the most ancient towns in all of Umbria. Gubbio still has many existing buildings of ancient times and civilization.
Gubbio is found on the Eugubine Tables that dates back to the beginning of Gubbio. These seven bronze sheets were discovered during the 15th century and are written in the Umbrian language of long ago, using not only letters from the Latin language but also Etruscan. These tables give a glimpse into Gubbio's past with documentation concerning their religious, government and other interesting aspects of the times.
While visiting Gubbio you will enjoy walking along the ancient roads and viewing many of the magnificent buildings that were erected in Gubbio throughout its unique and fascinating history.
Once you enter Gubbio you will not be visiting a modern town that just resembles a village or town from the Middle Ages, you will in fact be visiting a town that has preserved its Middle Ages atmosphere.
The Basilica is a very popular place to visit which is where St. Ubaldo was laid to rest. The castles in Gubbio are a marvel to see and include Beni del Bargello and Dukes Palace. Beni castle is home to the People Captain Fountain, which is one of Renaissance beauty. The Dukes Palace was built as a reminder of how important the Montefeltro family was to the administration of Gubbio.
The town center is also a wonderful rendition of Medieval times, which is not only the center of town but is also the symbol of the town. It was erected at the same time as the Piazza Pensile and the Pretorio Palace.
As you wander through the roads of Gubbio there are many exquisite buildings of ancient times that are a must see which include the Cathedral from the 12th century, St. Maria Nuova home to Madonna del Belvedere which was painted by Ottaviano Nelli in 1413, Nelli church from the 13th century, Convent of St. Francesco from the 13th century, St. Giovanni from the 12th century, St. Peter remodeled and enlarged in 1501, and Domenico which was remodeled and enlarged in the 16th century.
