The passenger traveling on the E45 from Perugia to Terni or vice versa, come halfway to meet a landscape that gradually becomes more gentle: the hills are softened, the spots of pastel colors stand out, the hills, the mount Peglia on one side and the Martano on the other, mark a horizon of no more than a thousand meters of altitude. We are in the heart of Umbria. Here the Tiber winding along the valley, you can see the old medieval villages that once were built to guard the surrounding area. The traveler who arrives in this part of Umbria, recalled from his most famous resort, quiet landscapes seen in varying shades of green that nature has to offer: from the lush countryside cultivated today with modern means but always in the traditional country of the people of Umbria, forests that darken the surrounding hills.
In 1568 Cipriano Piccolpasso, architect and painter, staying at Todi and Monte Castello di Vibio argued that here lived the ideal life em>, the best being the clean and healthy air and that people lived here even one hundred years and more em> and that hommini of 80 years seem to have just 35.
The city is not located in a director of traffic and to get there you should have already consciously chosen to go to Monte Castello di Vibio, because, due to its particular location on top of a hill at 422 m. sea level, the road ends right there, where they meet the walls of the ancient medieval stronghold.
Here, where we see a unique view over the gentle hills of Umbria, between old feelings in admiration on the river, that flows down the valley, including the friendliness of the people, which is now getting used to new faces who has discovered the virtues of this country, there are examples of art, culture and the beauties of nature: flavors and fragrances that this land has to offer. Here life flows in the total absence of evidence of stress. And this situation of nature still well preserved, so much that in Monte Castello di Vibio the vacancy may be called a no-stress natural holiday. There you can regenerate and take contact with yourself, as did St. Francis when he retired to the places of his land of Umbria.
The most important from the standpoint of the country is certainly represented by its urban structure, which reproduces quite closely that of a medieval castrum, seen from above, is made in the shape of heart. A look at the historic Port of May with the embattled sentry tower to the valley toward Todi, from which once it defended Monte Castello from the continuous raids of the city of Todi. Among the curiosities you can find in history there is the story in which Montecastellesi in 1565 - an example of this remarkable political skill-, so as to remain under the direct dominion of the Pope than with the nearby Todi, were willing to pay to the Chamber the sum of the Apostolic twenty-three thousand guilders, exactly the same figure that the city had already paid the same Tuderte government of the Church! In the historic center, there is the church of Santa Illuminata, with a venerated wooden crucifix of 1400. The bell tower, erected in 1850 on the site where once stood the ancient church of S. Rocco in Piazza V. Emanuele II with its terrace, where you can admire the wide views to the south and the hills of Umbria, Lazio and Abruzzo. On the same square insists the church of SS Philip and James and a well-tank of the sixteenth century, recently restored. Turning to the characteristics streets of Monte Castello you can see the doors of the dead (medieval), always located near the main gate, they could not reach the street level and were open only for the exit from the house of the coffin with the dead.
