Monte Santa Maria Tiberina is a nica medieval borgo above the Tiber river. It has ancient origins: it was an Etruscan town which could control the river. Around XI century AD it became a fief of the Marquis of Monte, an ancient family came with France, who conquered a vast part of the surrounding valleys. In 1198 the castle was destroyed by Pope Innocenzo III, but soon it was rebuilt. Monte Santa Maria Tiberina remained independent until 1815, and in 1869 it became part of Italy.
In Monte Santa Maria Tiberina you can visit the Pieve, built around 1000 years ago, the remaining of some tombs, Marquis Palace, Lippiano Castle, the Abbey and the Tower of Marzana.
