Montefalco is a small town in the province of Perugia, placed on top of a hill that overlooks the Umbrian valley below: for this position, is also known as the balcony of Umbria.
The city itself does not have a very ancient history, as it was inhabited only by after the Lombard period. Formerly home to some Roman villas, particularly that of Roman Senator Marco Curione, who gave his name to the city, Coccorone, from Cur Curionis. Some Roman artefacts were found in the town and are now visible in an old house just passed the main arch, inserted in the wall, and in the town museum. After the barbarian invasions, its position made it an important centre of the area: no coincidence, it seems that the Diocese of Spoleto moved there for about a century. It changed its name following the passage of Frederick II, falconry enthusiast and author of De arts venandi cum avibus: in his honour the city changed name in Montefalco. In the years following it got a municipal order, even if it came under the control of the family Trinci of Foligno and then finally under the rule of the Church. Over the years of the sixteenth century suffered a severe blow: a company of soldiers besieged and devastated the city, an event which marked a serious decline in the city.
Today Montefalco offers numerous attractions and events for tourists, many of which focused on the edge product of the town, the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG, a very tannic wine produced with the grape sagrantino, native of the area. Among the events we remember the Wine Week, held in September and during which the new Sagrantino is presented, the August Montefalchese, historical event presenting the Feast of St. Clare of Montefalco and the Fuga del Bove, Festivi calici, during the Christmas holidays, Terre del Sagrantino, which takes place instead during the Easter holidays.
