The town of Nocera Umbra is in the province of Perugia and rises on top of an hill, overlooking the valley of river Topino and the Via Flaminia. The origins of the village go back to the Paleolithic period; it was later controlled by the Romans, who gave it the name of Nucera Camellaria: during this period the population experienced a period of great prosperity and economic development.
In the following centuries the city became a diocese with the name of Nocera Umbra, it was under the control of the Lombards, with whom it became a county, and during the Middle Ages became a powerful fortress that had some relevance.
Nocera became a municipality, it was conquered by the powerful city of Perugia and soon strong walls were built, for defense against enemy attacks; the subsequent years saw the domination of the family of the Trinci, which already dominated the city of Foligno and finally, the territory was incorporated among the possessions of the Papal States.
In the visit of the city we can see the Dome, a structure which underwent several renovations during the 1400 and 1700, inside which there are some important architectural elements, such as the floor, which is made of ceramics, frescoes, the Church of San Francesco, which houses some paintings by Matteo da Gualdo and is now a museum, the Church of St. John the Baptist, and finally the Church of St. Philip, built in Gothic style.
Of particular interest is the structure of the Previssani Library fitted with a large number of important books, the Palace Camilli, home of the ancient and modern library, a documentation center on water and the historical deeds and the Teatro Comunale.
Nocera Umbra organizes every year the Palio of the Districts, an event which sees the race between them two parts of the city: Borgo San Martino and Borgo Santa Croce; during the festival events are held between the participants and there is a costume parade through the streets the country.
