Torgiano is a commune of Umbria, near Perugia, dominating the valleys of the river Tiber. The surroundings are of particular interest and beauty, with a predominantly medieval style; the history of Torgiano began in Roman times, as testified by the many discoveries that have occurred on territory.
In subsequent centuries the city was dominated by the Lombards and the Goths, then became a possession of the City of Perugia and, when it suffered a bitter defeat during the War of Salt, the power went to the State of the Church.
There are several churches in this Umbrian town, including the Church of San Bartolomeo, which structure was built around 1700 and holds important paintings, frescoes and historical works, the Church of Our Lady dell'Ulivello, built in the sixteenth century, which houses a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child between Saints Joseph and John, the Oratory of St. Anthony, which was built during the fourteenth century and which keeps a wonderful Altar Major Dedicated to the Holy and finally the Church of Santa Maria del Castle dating back to 1400 and in which there is a wooden statue representing the Virgin of Fatima.
The city is home to the Palazzo Graziani-Baglioni, buildings sixteenth home with a garden and today home to two important museums: the Museum of Wine, which testifies the culture of wine in the territory of Torgiano, and which holds important works of art, exhibits and documents, and the Museum of Olive Oil.
Torgiano is famous for being the first ad on the territory obtain the DOC recognition, which recently has turned into DOCG for wine product; particular interest is also expressed by "I Vinarelli", which is held every year ad August; during this celebration many artists exhibit in the creation of color paintings made with diluted wine.
