Umbertide, municipality of the province of Perugia , is located within the valley of the Tiber and in the immediate vicinity of Mount Acuto; the history of this village begins in the tenth century, when the original residential settlement was known by the name of Fratta.
In later times, during the medieval period, the power over the city is first held by Perugia and then by the state of the Church; in subsequent centuries the center was conquered by Prince Umberto and the city's name was changed from Fratta Umbertide.
Regarding the most important religious buildings we remember the Church of San Francesco, built around 1200, the fifteenth-century church dedicated to Santa Maria della Libertà, inside which is housed a fresco by Pinturicchio, the Church of Santa Croce, which is now home of the city museum and finally the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria della Reggia, built in the sixteenth century.
Just outside the village, we find two other major buildings of a religious nature: the Abbey of Montecorona, which was built in the eleventh century and which houses an important crypt, and the Abbey of San Cassiano, built around 1100 received bishops and important people.
Civil buildings that are located within the town of Umbertide are very interisting, such as the Rock, an ancient structure built during the medieval period in the middle of 1300 which today houses The Center for Contemporary Art, the Museum, located inside the church of Santa Croce and the Palazzo Comunale, home of the offices of the city hall.
Umbertide is also included in the route of the Strada del Vino Colli del Trasimeno, which comprises the area of production of wine DOC, DOCG and IGT and is famous for the event The nineteenth Taverne, during which the alleys and the streets of the country are crowded by people with traditional costume and are shown as the old battles of the Risorgimento.
